Company fined after worker loses finger

March 29 2016

An automotive company has been fined £27,000 after a worker lost his finger due to failings relating to safety at work.

Birmingham Magistrates’ Court heard how the welder at Lander Automotives Limited had to work on a variety of jobs as required by production.

The welder was working on a machine in June 2015 when his glove became entangled in the drill bit. He suffered a partial amputation to the third finger on his right hand.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that the company failed to provide adequate training, a safe system of work, a risk assessment, or a method statement.

The Birmingham company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £27,000 and ordered to pay costs of £1,574 and a £120 victim surcharge.
